Book Club – Awake: A Memoir by Jen Hatmaker

Jen Hatmaker was a media darling of the Evangelical Christian community until she faced two major life crises. A blogger, TV personality, author and pastor’s wife, she showed humor, vulnerability and just enough sass to win leagues of followers and admirers without challenging basic church beliefs. When she announced her support for LGBTQ rights, her stature took a major tumble and her own church largely rejected her. Not long after, she discovered her husband of 26 years was having an affair. In this new memoir, Hatmaker brings that same vulnerability and humor to her story of midlife divorce and what comes after.
Since many of us haven’t had time to fully dig into it yet, we’ve decided to push back the date. And since we like it so much, we’ve decided to make it an in person meet up in Brooklyn!
The New York Times describes Jen Hatmaker’s book as “a lucent and nervy” memoir about divorce, but really about “something much bigger, more universal.” Also, Hatmaker is a good story teller.
Yes, her narrative is one many of us recognize, at least in its broad strokes. In her case, a successful career as a Christian culture leader had just unravelled when she discovered that her husband of 26 years was having an affair. Her tale is about how she pulled herself from the wreckage.
We’re excited for you to read the book and come talk about it over dinner!
