Edith Wharton had to prove adultery in order to divorce the depressive and alcoholic Teddy Wharton after 28 years of marriage. She was in her forties when she fell in love with Paris and with the journalist Morton Fullerton whom she met there. She lived and worked in Paris on and off until her death from a stroke at the age of 75.
