Annie Proulx first married around the time she first dropped out of college. She eventually finished her degree, and then studied toward a PhD, but ended her academic career at the same time that she ended her third marriage. She raised her three sons on her own, and it wasn’t until she was in her 50’s that she published her first short story collection.
